DeRace is excited to announce that we will integrate Chainlink VRF, a verifiable source of on-chain randomness, to bring fair and unpredictable gameplay dynamics to our platform. Chainlink’s industry-leading random number generator will allow users to breed horse NFTs with truly random traits, as well as randomly determine the winners of horse races according to a predefined set of odds.
Randomness is what keeps things from becoming monotonous — it’s what leads to curiosity and risk, and it’s one of the best tools to keep games thrilling and fresh. This is where Chainlink VRF steps in, making blockchain games more trustworthy by manifesting truly unpredictable and tamper-proof in-game results. Moreover, Chainlink is the most time-tested and widely used decentralized oracle network in the blockchain industry, ensuring the utmost reliability in the consistent delivery of verifiably random numbers to DeRace.
Powering Racehorse Breeding and Competition With Chainlink VRF
In horse breeding, the genetic algorithm generates the third NFT horse by combining genes from parent horses, with +/- 5% deviation in characteristics (VRF is applied during this process). That means that even if both parents had a speed property of 20, the foal’s speed can be in the range of 19 to 21.
In horse racing, Chainlink VRF will choose a winner from all participating horses. While generally faster horses have a higher chance of winning, even the slowest horse has a small probability to win thanks to the integrity of Chainlink VRF. What’s more, Chainlink VRF will provide transparency of the process and results via an on-chain audit trail proving how its randomness was generated, which is a crucial factor to keep the community’s trust in the DeRace platform.
On a technical level, Chainlink VRF works by combining block data that is still unknown when the request is made with the oracle node’s pre-committed private key to generate both a random number and a cryptographic proof. The DeRace smart contract will only accept the random number input if it has a valid cryptographic proof, and the cryptographic proof can only be generated if the VRF process is tamper-proof. This provides users with automated and publicly verifiable assurances directly on-chain that each request using Chainlink VRF for randomness is provably fair and cannot be tampered with or predicted by the oracle, outside entities, or the DeRace team.
“All in all, our decision to integrate Chainlink VRF is an important milestone for DeRace as ensuring unpredictable outcomes is one of the most fundamental tasks of keeping any game exciting and fair,” stated Adomas Juodišius, CEO of DeRace. “We look forward to completing our integration with the Chainlink Network to enhance our gameplay and create a more fun and competitive experience for our community members.”
Chainlink is the industry standard oracle network for powering hybrid smart contracts. Chainlink Decentralized Oracle Networks provide developers with the largest collection of high-quality data sources and secure off-chain computations to expand the capabilities of smart contracts on any blockchain. Managed by a global, decentralized community, Chainlink currently secures billions of dollars in value for smart contracts across decentralized finance (DeFi), insurance, gaming, and other major industries.
Chainlink is trusted by hundreds of organizations, from global enterprises to projects at the forefront of the blockchain economy, to deliver definitive truth via secure, reliable oracle networks.
